On May 5th the world celebrated Cinco De Mayo, a date that commemorates the Mexican army’s victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla that took place on May 5, 1862. Here in the U.S. we take this day to celebrate Mexican-American culture. And what better way to celebrate such a commemorative moment than in an outfit that offers an honorable nod to the Mexican culture.

In this week’s segment of A Fashion Story, we’ve taken on a few pieces that demonstrates the essence of a culture known for a love of rich and vibrant colors. When one thinks of Mexico, he/she closes their eyes and envisions waves of rich color and clay pots of course! Gotta throw my tidbit about container gardening somewhere in there too.

Now let me just go ahead and put it out there… I love the idea of a cultural melting pot. My family is the poster group for cultural variety as our ancestral roots trace back to many different races. Cinco De Mayo provided a chance for me to finally display a few of my favorite new pieces including these fabulously fun sunglasses from Old Navy (400 UV protection level), this gorgeous cardigan from Charlotte Russe and the shoes! What can I say about a super fun wedge? I found these babies at Kohls one day when I was checking up on JLo’s latest fashion offerings.

This outfit showcases pattern mixing, something I’ve recently begun to enjoy. The trick to making an outfit like this one work without appearing as though you’ve ripped off tidbits from every single fashion magazine ever written is to stick with similar colors in each pattern. The American Rag tank top has the muted versions of the colors in the cardigan. The shoes also present the same colors on a much stronger level.

I wore light-colored jeans to put some distance between the two to avoid looking as though I have way too much going on. A pair of gorgeous white sunglasses goes with almost anything, don’t you agree? And they offer a sense of superstar style you can’t get in other shades, including black. Grab a pair of these babies and then come back and tell us how you turned heads all day long with your fabulous superfly style!
What do you think of pattern mixing?
