The Fabulous Home 17 Ways to Decorate A Porch

Springtime has sprung! If you’re like me then you’ve been not-so-patiently waiting for this most gorgeous time of the year. I don’t know about you, but I find the dramatic changes in spring and fall to be pretty darn fantastic. When you think about the aspects of each season, then you’ll appreciate the work of these two-time periods.

While summer and winter contain a vast amount of beauty in their own rights as well, one can’t overlook the fact that spring and fall did all the setup work. It’s kind of like the preparations for a play. Only the star is Mother Nature and her kids spring and fall created the designs.

Which brings us to the subject of this month’s episode of the Fabulous Home. The urge to spring clean hits me like a log at this time of the year. When it does, I like to take advantage of this surge of renewed energy. What better way to do so than by taking some time to dust off the cobwebs, leaves, and other miscellaneous evidence of winter off your front porch? Doing so paves the way for you to create an unforgettable entryway that your visitors will love.

The following list of ideas has a host of suggestions for turning your porch into a mini abode. The concepts range from simple such as adding a few plants here and there to a bit more complex such as adding a pergola. Let’s jump straight into our ideas for 17 ways to decorate a porch.

1. Clean the Area

This step should go without saying. However, the best way to create an inviting entryway is to start with a tidy entrance. Clean the doors, windows, cobwebs, and leftover leaves.

2. Know Your Decor Style

The front porch will be an extension of the style of decor you’ve chosen inside. Keep this fact in mind as you start your decorating plan.

3. Choose a new welcome mat

This is one of the easiest and my favorite way to freshen up the porch for spring.

4. Purchase Two Urns

These pretty babies come in all sizes, colors, and materials. Yet the classic style works for almost any type of decor style while adding just the right amount of elegance.

5. Use Tropical Plants

Tropical plants boast large green leaves and unique shapes. They make beautiful additions to the porch or any other part of your home.

6. Add Colorful Flowerpots

Get creative with this one. You can buy the perfect pot or use your DIY skills to make one.

7. Choose heat-hardy plants such as geraniums to adorn the colorful pots.

Geraniums can withstand enormous levels of heat. However, as with any other greenery you choose to keep outside the house, you’ll need to take proper care in its upkeep. Too much sun and not enough water can kill these cuties in a heartbeat. The trick is to find the right balance between the two and at the best time of day.

8. Add hanging plants

Macrame and metal plant hangers are all the rage these days. They come in many designs so be sure and choose one that works for your style.

9. Don’t be afraid to use concepts of bohemian decor.

Don’t get nervous. It’s easier to add elements of boho style than you might think at first thought. Use items such as dreamcatchers, sundials, sun pottery, etc. to make the most of this increasingly popular element of home decor.

10. Add A Pergola

Fortunately, pergolas come in different shapes, sizes, and ease of construction these days. Pergolas can be purchased online at sites like Wayfair.com. Or you can have your contractor build a more sturdy version that will fit the design and style of your home.

11. Update your benches with fresh throw pillows and cushions.

Throw pillows are one of the easiest ways to spruce up any room and that includes both indoor and outdoor rooms.

12. Add a Potted Succulent Garden.

Succulents are everywhere these days and I love that this has happened. The ideas for ways to use them are endless. Prepare to see a post dedicated to these babies very soon.

13. Tile the Stairs

The sky is the limit with this idea. You can simply add a few well-placed tiles and create an easy pop of color or hire a professional to complete a makeover of the stairway.

14. Repair and Repaint Distressed Boards

No amount of cleaning and decorating will create an engaging porch if visitors are preoccupied with checking out your cracked boards and peeling paint. Keep the entrance to your home well maintained. This is the first impression guests will get when arriving at your abode. Make it a good one.

15. Keep Holiday Themes in Mind

One of the easiest ways to dress up a porch is to decorate for the holidays. This idea isn’t limited to the major holidays. You can celebrate Easter, the Fourth of July and even St Patrick’s Day.

16. Add small structures such as bird cages and fairy gardens.

17. Add elements of Feng Shui

If you don’t know what this concept involves then you’re in luck. Our spinoff alternative lifestyle site Mystikaly.com will cover the elements of feng shui and the ways you can use them in your home decor. Basically, feng shui involves using the five major elementals in your home design: metal, fire, air, earth, and water.

The placement of these items helps to improve your overall state of emotional well-being. I for one can testify to the effectiveness of feng shui as I have practiced a lifestyle of mindful placement throughout the last couple of decades. Doing so has allowed me to make major changes in all areas of my life and it will do so for yours as well.

That’s it for our list. We hope you can take some of these tips and make the suggestions your own. Don’t forget to come back and let us know which ones you used and how they worked out for your decor plan.
