The Fall 2019 BHG One Room Challenge Week Two
I almost called this post the battle of the blue paint colors. That was because my family and I found ourselves fully caught up in the melee of week 2 of the BHG One Room Challenge.
I mean, we’ve literally surrounded ourselves in the chaos. Our living room is filled with boxes and pieces reserved for the design. Take a look at the initial mood board. Yes, it’s lovely. Yes, it has already changed. Why? See the next paragraph.
We’ve run into that dilemma that so many designers find themselves facing… finding the ultimate paint color. More about this dilemma later on.
My son is excited anyway because this super cool mesh colored chair embodies the entire spirit of the urban modern design scheme.
Most items in this post come from Wayfair but you’ll find plenty of other beautiful pieces from other great companies as well throughout our coverage of this renovation.
Since this isn’t a sponsored post, we’re going to enjoy this process and hope that our dilemma helps you work through your renovation fears. Did you miss our week 1 recap post? No worries. You can find it right here.
The main room design is set. Here is a snapshot of what the 3D floorplan will look like when we’re done.
This plan took some fancy brain juice. I found it hard to get the style to work out in my head. I didn’t want something that took away from the look of the room. I also didn’t want a design that made the space feel too elegant or polished.
My son attends college so he doesn’t want mom making his room feel too much like a hotel. I chose a gorgeous, dark navy called Naval, the complete opposite of the baby blue that had created the skies looming over the Pirate ship currently sailing across his room.
See before pic above for proof of this description. The design was going to knock some socks off. I was pretty darn content with all the positive Instagram comments the plan received. Besides, Naval is the Sherwin Williams Color of the Year for 2020. How could I go wrong?
My son, however, wasn’t sold on my color of choice. Sporting the Color of the Year label didn’t sway his diehard Carolina fan at heartedness one bit. While I thought the hue was amazing and would truly set off any design plan we came up with, my son experienced bouts of true ambivalence. He wanted a Carolina blue shade.
Well, we had been there done that (again… see photo above) and I helped him to understand why he needed a calmer blue. Yes, there are certain blues that can be just as hyper energy inducing as say bright red or neon green walls. For him, light blue is that trigger. He agreed. Yet… he still didn’t want Naval.
Back to the painting board.
While we still hadn’t ruled out Naval, I took to several of my designer friends’ websites and social media groups to help find a lighter blue. One that would still be dark enough to be considered a moody shade of blue.
Enter New York State of Mind by Benjamin Moore…
We’ve gone back and forth between many moody blues in the last few days. The blues that we’ve chosen each pack a ton of unique personality. Here are the finalists: Naval (my designer’s eye tells me this is still the best choice), New York State of Mind by Benjamin Moore, Adriatic Sea by Benjamin Moore, and Newburyport Blue.

Time is ticking so we’ve set a deadline for this coming Friday as the drop-dead date for the final paint choice. All renovation steps are on hold until we can decide on the star of this design. Meanwhile, Wayfair keeps shipping at lightning-fast speed and the living room is filling up fast. Will we make our five-week deadline?
Stay tuned for next week’s post to discover the winner of our battle of the blues.
Meanwhile, have a look at the gorgeous rooms of the other BHG One Room Challenge participants.

I vote for Naval. Trust your gut my friend. 🙂
Good news! I think Naval won him over! Lol
I can vouch for Newburyport blue as I used it in a project and it’s really a fantastic color. Looking forward to the end result!
Look forward to seeing which blue you both agree on.
My kids are my hardest clients!
oh I feel your pain! It’s hard enough choosing color but then adding a second opinion into the mix makes it even harder! Good luck and I look forward to following along.
Tricky to design a room with your son involved but I understand why. I know MY blue pick for the room. Cant Wait to see the final choice!
I like Naval – I have specified it so many times =) No matter what you choose it will look stunning! =)
All the blue choices are lovely, but very different looks – it will be fun to see what the decision ends up being!
Very cute! I know your sone will be very happy with his room!
This was fun to read, KaSonndra…and I bet this is a dilemma faced by many of your readers: Mom likes one color, adult age children… who won’t be there all the time… like another. I am looking forward to learning which color will win the #BattleofTheBlues and am wondering.. is there a way to incorporate #TwoBlues?
Oh, I love Adriatic Sea!
Oh the dreaded second opinion! It always gets us second guessing doesn’t it? My only advice is to go with your gut feeling remember that the paint is only the backdrop to the rest of the room that you designed. All of the other elements are going to bring your space to life!
I’m looking forward to seeing how this week turns out for you!
Oh man, I definitely understand the color dilemma. Color can be the biggest challenge when more than one voice is involved. I do love Navel but my second choice is Newburport blue. I’ve used it many times and it’s beautiful. Good luck and I look forward to seeing what you end up choosing!
