The 2019 Fall BHG One Room Challenge Week 5

Heading into week 5 of the 2019 fall BHG One Room Challenge, we find ourselves seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Seriously though. This design rocks. Now you might be thinking to yourself what in the world takes so long? Why did one little itty bitty room take the whole month to design? There are several answers to that question. This week we will be exploring how we’ve managed to get back on track while renovating.

I find it hard to believe that week 6 is only a few days away. The big reveal happens next Wednesday. Yes, we will be ready for that. And no, it doesn’t feel that way right now. However, the design plan that we created evolved in a few places. For example, we couldn’t decide on the wall color. We went through several shades of blue after I’d decided that Sherwin Williams’ Color of the Year, Navel, would be our winner. My son said it was too dark and I thought it was the perfect backdrop for the eclectic urban modern student oasis. Wow! That’s a mouthful, isn’t it?

I’m happy to say that all of the pieces are here and the plan is coming together. The one big change we’ve made here in the last couple of weeks is going to take the entire weekend to finish. More on that project here in a bit. While shopping for knick-knacks for the final reveal, I found several unique curtain rods. We’ve decided to go with curtain closets instead of doors.

This decision turned out to be one of the best in the design because the curtain closets really bring out the modern nature of the decor plan. Since we’ve decided to temporarily keep the carpet in the room, we need as many modern amenities as possible. Most urban designs don’t have carpet as the flooring. However, as we discussed in last week’s post, you can totally rock carpet if it is a bright color like the red shade in my son’s room.

Let’s move on to a couple of vignettes that I’ve taken. Here is the beautiful bench.

The design actually flows stunningly well with a pair of curtains that we decided to go with at the last minute. I’ve taken a photo of that pattern and here it is. Isn’t it lovely?

The design of the curtains, the rug, and the bench all help to play up the other elements. When mixing patterns in your design it’s crucial that there’s some sort of similarity amongst the designs. That’s the key to making patterns work together.

And how about that kitty cat litter box? What litter box you’re probably asking right now. There is one here, I promise. It doesn’t look like your standard litter box but it is most definitely a cat potty. Not only does this cabinet serve as a litter box but it also creates as a cat hidey-hole. Our Hercules is going to love it.

Let’s move on to the star of the show. Or perhaps I should say one of many stars in the show. How about this gorgeous hutch desk by World Menagerie? Is it not perfect for a college student?

There are so many compartments and places to store computers and notebooks. We’re also going to install shelves right above the hutch, giving our son a place for his books. The eclectic library part of the design is coming to life.

Finally, I wanted to mention the wallpaper we chose at the super last minute. It’s a deco design and so very unique. It has been a while I installed wallpaper, so please do wish us luck.

That’s it for our week 5 recap. We are definitely headed into the stretch and smiling while doing so. The design elements are all here. We’ve managed to stick to our schedule. And we have so many surprises for you during the reveal. I can’t wait to share the design of this room with you.

Thanks to all of you who stuck by us through this entire challenge. Be sure and come back to see the total room design next week. And don’t forget to stop by and support the other 2019 BHG One Room Challenge participants.
