Welcome back, friend. It has been too long, and I’m so happy to be sitting down with you again.

There’s something about the first crisp mornings of fall that makes me want to clear the decks. The air gets sharper, the light gets softer, and suddenly all the things I’ve been carrying around start to feel heavy. If you feel it too, you’re not imagining it.

In the Chinese five-element tradition, autumn belongs to Metal, the element of clarity, boundaries, and letting go. So this month, let’s use the season instead of fighting it. Here’s a simple four-step reset you can do in one cozy afternoon, or spread over a week if that’s kinder to your schedule.

What Is the Metal Element, Anyway?

Think of a polished blade or a quiet silver bell. Metal is about what’s essential. It cuts away what no longer serves you and keeps what’s true.

Metal is also connected to the breath, which is why it’s a lovely season for slowing down and taking a deep one. If you’re starting a new chapter, whether that’s a career shift, an empty nest, or simply deciding to live more on your own terms, this is the perfect energy to borrow.

Step 1: Clarity — Clear One Surface

Start small. Pick one surface, like your nightstand, your desk, or the kitchen counter, and clear it completely. Wipe it down. Put back only what you love or use daily.

That’s it. One surface. You’re not cleaning your whole life today. You’re reminding yourself what a clear space feels like, and then your mind starts to follow.

While you wipe, ask yourself: What do I actually want more room for right now?

Step 2: Boundaries — Choose One Gentle No

Metal is also the element of edges, the line between what’s yours and what isn’t. Boundaries can feel scary if you’ve spent years being the one who says yes to everything.

Try this: pick one small thing you’ve been agreeing to out of habit, and decide to say no, or “not right now,” this week. It doesn’t need a big speech. A kind, short sentence works beautifully.

For me, it was the time when I finally said no to yet another interview for a position that no longer fit the woman I had become.

You’ll be amazed by how much energy comes back when you stop over-giving.

Step 3: Release — Write It Down, Then Let It Go

Grab a piece of paper and write down what you’re ready to release: an old worry, a grudge, a “should,” or a version of yourself that doesn’t fit anymore.

Read it once, then do something ceremonial with it. Tear it up, shred it, or (safely!) burn it in a fireproof bowl. Take a deep breath as it goes.

Letting go doesn’t mean you didn’t care. It means you’re ready to carry less.

Step 4: Refinement — Keep What Shines

Once you’ve cleared and released, it’s time to refine. Look at what’s left and ask, What here is worth polishing?

Maybe it’s a friendship that deserves more of your time, a creative project you shelved, or a dream that only got quieter with age. Metal reminds us that the good stuff gets better with attention, not busier.

Write down one thing you’ll keep and one small way you’ll tend to it this season.

Add a Little Color Therapy

Since I can’t resist a color moment, here’s a bonus. Metal’s colors are white, silver, gray, and gold. Try adding one of them somewhere you’ll see it every day: a soft gray throw, a silver ring, a white vase, or a touch of gold on your desk.

Color works on us quietly. Surround yourself with clarity, and clarity tends to show up.

A Few Tips to Make It Stick

  • Keep it short. Even 20 minutes counts. This is a ritual, not a project.
  • Make it pretty. Light a candle, brew your favorite tea, put on soft music.
  • Repeat it each season. Metal season comes around every fall, so you can make this your yearly reset.

Your Turn

You don’t need anything fancy for this ritual. A notebook you already own and a pen you like are plenty. Keep them somewhere visible this week so the reset stays on your mind.

Now I’d love to hear from you. What’s one thing you’re releasing this fall? Share it in the comments, or keep it just for you. Either way, I’m cheering you on.

Until next time, stay fabulous!

I’m also putting the finishing touches on a companion journal for this season. More on that soon!
